MATERIAL
polypropylene (polypropene)

DESCRIPTION
The tapestry of coarsely woven synthetic material shows an orange-red and a blue, intertwined ribbon against a white background.

Specifics
Orange-red and blue twine: Polypropylene (PP)
White twine: Polypropylene (PP)

Wil Fruytier-van der Lande (Amsterdam 1915-2007) was a pioneer in textile art. Her work changed the traditional image of textile wall hangings. The focus is no longer on appearance and technique but on the concept of the work. She did not make ‘tapestries’ or ‘wall hangings’ anymore, but robust, spatial creations with coarse cables, rope, twine, and synthetic materials such as plastics. She called herself a ‘textile architect’ because for her it was the space that mattered and not just the flat, two-dimensional surface.

CONDITION
Light soiling of the surface, especially visible on the white polypropylene twine at the front. Slight degradation of the orange-red and blue polypropylene twine. The coloured fibres feel greasy and break easily, but are not yet crumbling. At locations where degradation is visible, the colours are slightly faded. Degradation is more pronounced at the front than at the back; there the white twine is not affected and does not feel greasy. It is firmer and smoother than the coloured twine. The degradation is probably caused by exposure to daylight and/or artificial light. Damage on the high parts of the weave, especially at the back side, may be the result of rubbing against the wall during hanging.

Exhibition and Storage
The material is light sensitive. Degraded fibres are somewhat brittle and break easily. Given its light sensitivity exhibition lighting for the tapestry should be limited, for example by reducing the exhibition duration.
The tapestry should be stored hanging, in a dark, cool, dry, and clean space. A loose lining at the back, attached to the hanging bar, reduces damage from rubbing against the wall.
